[心灵鸡汤 ] The Tattooed Child
仅仅根据一个人的外表而做出的判断,往往是不准确的。一个有着纹身的“坏”男孩的内
心与其他孩子相比并没有不同,他们都同样渴望被人关怀。
I had brought my six-year-old daughter, Elli, to the hospital. We sat
in the chair waiting for our turn. When a stranger first walked in, I
instinctively moved closer to Elli. He was very tall and strong. His head
was shaved and he wore several earrings in his ears and nose. On one arm
there was a huge tattoo. He sat near us, which made me uncomfortable.
Elli didn’t seem to feel the same. She quickly made friends with the
stranger, whose name was Anthony. I opened a children’s book and read to
Elli. When I was reading, Elli was drawing on one of the young man’s arms
with her markers. Suddenly I noticed that Anthony’s left arm was completely
covered with red and blue flowers.
"Elli!"I said loudly. "I don’t think Anthony[pic] is going to like
that. You’ll have to wash that off for him right away!"[pic]I was
[pic]afraid of what this big, tough boy might say or do to my little girl.
But Anthony said softly, "It’s OK. I don’t mind. Could you read more?
It helps me."
And then I saw what my daughter saw —Anthony wasn’t any different from
any of the other children in that room who were in pain, who had come for
treatment, except for one thing. It wasn’t his size or his clothes or even
his scary tattoo that made him different. What set him apart, I realized,
was that he didn’t have a mother[pic] there to read to him. And he needed
one.
