问：在《中考英语阶段过关》（2005年版）一书的第107页上，有这样一道选词填空题：“I  don’t   know   ______   she  will   come  or  not.  (if  ;  whether)”该书的辅导手册第89页所给的答案是whether，并且指出：“当句中有or或or  not时，只能用whether”。但是，有些英语老师说这道题既可以填whether ，也可以填 if 。究竟应该填哪一个词呢？                                                                     

答：我认为有些英语老师的说法是正确的。如果whether或者if引导的宾语从句放在主句的后面，既可以说whether … or  not , 也可以说 if … or  not ；如果宾语从句放在主句的前面 ，只能说 Whether … or  not ，不能说 If … or  not ；可以说whether （Whether） or  not 不能说 if （If） or  not  ，也就是说，or  not 可以紧跟在whether （Whether）的后面，而不能紧跟在 if （If）的后面。例如：Let  me  know  whether  you  can  come  or  not . 你能不能来，请告诉我一下。（ … if  you  can  come  or  not 也可以说。）（摘自英国Michael  Swan的《英语用法指南》第二版翻译本第850页，外语教学与研究出版社出版发行，2000年9月第1版）在美国和英国出版的英语著作中，也可以找到类似的例句：（1）I  don’t  care  if  you  come  or  not . （2） She  asked  me  if  I  was  going  to  the  store  （ or  nor ）.（3）I  don’t  care  if  your  car  breaks  down  or  not . （这三个例句转引自《初高中英语考点难点详解词典》第406页，赵振才教授编著，黑龙江人民出版社出版，2002年10月第1版）《英语辅导报》社的外籍编审 Joseph在2005年2月8日给笔者的电子邮件中也认为下面两个句子是正确的：“（1）I  don’t  know  whether  she  will  come  or  not .（2） I  don’t  know  if  she  will  come  or  not .” 下面的句子是错误的：If  I’ll  have  time  or  not  I’m  not  sure  at  the  moment . （应该把If 改为 Whether） 

 问：有这样一道改错题：“We  are  discussing  if  we’ll  have  a  party  or  not .”参考答案是把if改为whether 或者去掉or  not。根据上一题的解答，我认为原来的句子也是正确的。

   问：有这样一道改错题：“Let’s  talk  about  if  we  can  swim  in  that  river  or  not .”参考答案是把 or  not 去掉。这个答案正确吗？
