English plays an important role in the contemporary society. This requires our English major students to grasp more specific knowledge of English .English writing is one of the most important skills among listening ,speaking ,reading and writing .In the practical English writing course ,I benefited a lot .This term paper contains five important aspects of English writing that I learned from this course

English sentence writing

Basically, we should know that a grammatically complete sentence is one that contains at least a subject and a predicate verb. This chapter mainly talks about how to write good English sentences, and only if we had grasped the following six key points can we achieve this goal.

First is the classification of English sentences. According to different criteria, we can classify English sentences into different categories. According to their grammatical structure, English sentences can be divided into four types: simple sentences, compound sentences, complex sentences and compound-complex sentences; According to rhetorical point of view, we can divide English sentence into three types: loose sentences, periodic sentences and balanced sentences; According to their function ,English sentences can be divided into four types ：declaration sentence ,interrogative sentence ,imperative sentence and exclamatory sentence.

Second is the basic patterns of English sentences. English basic sentence patterns actually is the basic sentence patterns of simple sentences, SV sentence pattern is the most basic of simple sentence patterns. It is important to remember this basic structure of a sentence, because no matter how long and how complex the sentences are, they are all transformation of the SV sentence pattern.

Next is about how to expanding basic sentence patterns. Three methods are mentioned. They are addition, coordination and subordination.

Following that is parallel structure .If a Long sentence is parallel in grammatical structure, it will appear more clear and easy to understand.

Fifth is sentence structure problems .Cause English is hypotaxis,so it is strictly restricted by some grammatical rules .If we ignore or disobey such rules, we may make some mistakes, and the sentence we make will be difficult to understand, or sometimes ambiguous. Sentence fragments, run-on sentences, misplaced modifiers and dangling modifiers are the most popular problems in sentence writing.

Last is subject-verb agreement. It is necessary for a sentence to have a set of subject-predicate structure. The predicate changes as the person and number changes.

English paragraph writing

A paragraph often consists of three important parts: topic sentence, supporting sentences and concluding sentences.

Paragraph writing should follow the principle of unity. Unity of a paragraph is something related to its content. That is to say if all the sentences in a paragraph lead to one central theme, then the paragraph is unified.

The second requirement for paragraph writing is coherence. Coherence is related to the form of the paragraph. The sentence s in a paragraph should be arranged in a clear, logical way and the transitional part should be natural.

There are many ways for us to develop paragraphs. We can develop paragraphs by time, process, space, example, comparison and contrast, and we can also develop paragraphs by classification, cause and effect.

ENNGLISH ESSAY WRITING

Knowing how to write English sentences and paragraphs is very helpful for us to write English essay. Introductory paragraph, body and conclusions are the three important parts of an English essay. Because we expressed different feelings, ideas contents, so we should develop our essays into different types such as narration, description, exposition and argumentation.

But how to write an English essay? If we do as the following process, then it must be very easy to write an English essay. First, we should determine the topic .Second, we may find and select materials .Third, we should organize materials into an outline .The last two steps are drafting and revising.

What impressed me most is how to make an outline. Because I find that if you make an outline before start to write an essay, it can really make your writing easier and more fluent. In the writing class, we mainly talked about three types of outlines: topic outline, sentence outline and topic-sentence outline. When you want to make an outline, you should make it logically paralleled.

English letters and resume writing

Letters play an important role in handling affairs and transferring information. A letter is mainly made up of heading, dateline, inside address, salutation, body, complimentary close, signature and envelope. When you write a letter, the following four kinds of formats can be selected: block format, modified block format, semi-block format and indented format. Business letters ,personal letters are the most basic kinds of letters .According to different purposes of writing letters ,we can divided letters into six types :letters of invitation ,letters of congratulations ,letters of thanks ,letters of apology , letters of recommendation and letters of application .

Resume is a kind of document mainly for job –hunting. It is important because it’s the first and decisive step for job application. The structure and the content of resume is not strictly required. The typical English resume is made up of personal data, career objective, education, experience, specialization, achievements publications and references. According to different purposes and usages, resume can be divided into three types: chronological resume, functional resume and combination resume. When you write a resume, the following three kinds of formats can be selected: side heading, centered heading and combination.

English research paper writing

English research paper writing is useful for would-be graduates. A research paper is made up of title page, acknowledgements, outline, abstract, the text of the paper (introduction, body, and conclusion), notes, works cited and appendix. Before you start to write a research paper, you should make enough preparations such as choosing a topic, preparing the references, analyzing the data and making an outline. It is important to grasp the major steps of English research paper writing. When you start to write, you should do as the followings:

Negotiating a topic .We often say interest is the best teacher, therefore we should focus on what we are interested in. when you are hesitated for which topic you should choose, you may talk with others or read some related books and materials.

Narrowing down the research topic .You should consider the needs and expectations of your readers, and also you should consider the available source materials.

Taking notes while reading books. It is really useful to collect information and resources.

Writing the paper .First is to develop a thesis statement .Second is to work out an outline. Then is to produce a first draft .Following that is to revise. The last step is to prepare the final draft.

Documenting sources .It is necessary to label the works you referred to .It is also a way to show your respect to the author.

Writing abstracts. The abstract is usually the last part to be written .It is the condensed form of the body part .The abstract is really important and useful because most readers start reading a paper from the abstract.
